Orchidom |
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
|
At Orchidom today, there are more than three million orchids under cultivation, flowing from a laboratory that is currently producing 800,000 plants per year. The production of the laboratory flows to 150 greenhouses containing more than a half million square feet under roof. |

|
Orchidom is celebrating the thirteenth anniversary of its founding this year. At its launch in 1996 there were no orchids and no greenhouses, only an orchid laboratory and a business plan dedicated to the production of top-quality orchids to meet the needs of commercial orchid growers and wholesalers in the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America. The company's founders and senior managers have decades-long experience with greenhouse orchid culture, orchid hybridizing, commercial orchid production, and orchid sales. |

Orchidom's Environment
|
Why is Orchidom located in the Dominican Republic? |
More on our orchid culture and growing environment.

While our superior breeding lines, our cultural practices and the skill of our greenhouse personnel are essential, nature is Orchidom's "chief grower". Clear mountain-stream water, ideal temperatures and gentle trade winds provide us with a growing environment in which chemicals and fertilizers are needed only in minimal amounts. This lowers our production costs while, at the same time, producing faster-growing and stronger orchids. It's not often that you see orchid greenhouses where lizards, birds, frogs, butterflies, and other creatures happily co-exist with the orchids.

The company's operations are supported by a 100-person work force spread among its laboratory and administrative facilities in Santo Domingo, its main greenhouse complex in Pedregal, just north of Santo Domingo, its cool weather greenhouses near Constanza in the nearby mountains, and its hybridizing greenhouses in Maryland and Virginia in the U.S.

Why purchase from Orchidom? |
|
Nearly ideal growing conditions eliminate the need for closed greenhouses or mechanical ventilation by taking advantage of the prevailing trade winds. The labor-intensive orchid production process is supported by a favorable labor market, yielding significant cost savings that are passed on to Orchidom's customers in the form of lower prices than those offered by other producers of comparable products. |

Orchidom's Award-winning Hybridizers and Orchid Breeding Stock |
|
The breeding stock used by Orchidom's hybridizers, from which the orchids presently offered for sale are descended, is the product of decades of collecting, selecting and breeding by the company's principal hybridizers. These breeding collections feature many plants that are the product of generations of breeding effort and are on the cutting edge of orchid breeding today, especially the company's Phalaenopsis, its compact-growing Dendrobiums, its smaller-growing Oncidiums, and its Mini- and Midi-Cattleyas. The company's principal hybridizers are active participants in the American Orchid Society's Orchid Judging Program, and plants from their breeding collections have been recognized by the American Orchid Society with more than 300 flower quality and cultural awards. |
Sales and Shipping Information
|
Import requirements of destination countries |
As a general matter, the regulations of the United States Department of Agriculture require that orchids imported into the United States be shipped bareroot. However, the regulations make an exception for plants growing on coconut husks, out-of-pot but with the rootball undisturbed. Regulations vary from country to country in the Caribbean and Latin America, but most countries are less restrictive than the U.S. The company ships Phalaenopsis bareroot, including in-spike Phals, year-round. While some Dendrobiums are shipped bareroot, most are shipped out-of-pot but with the rootball intact, growing on chunks of coconut, enabling plants to be shipped in-spike. Oncidiums and Cattleyas have typically been shipped bareroot, but increasing numbers of plants are now being grown on coconut chunks to enable their shipment in-spike or in-bud. |
|
Shipping to the United States |
Shipments to the United States are by air freight via San Juan, Puerto Rico, which is the port-of-entry for Orchidom plants. All export/import documentation and processing, as well as Customs and USDA inspections in San Juan, are arranged by Orchidom. Orchidom's customs broker delivers each customer's shipment to his designated freight carrier for the delivery from San Juan to the customer's greenhouses. Both minimum purchase restrictions and quantity discounts apply. |
|
Shipping to the Caribbean and Latin America |
The regulations governing the import of orchids vary from country to country, as do freight charges from Santo Domingo. Therefore, shipments to Caribbean and Latin American destinations are invoiced FOB Santo Domingo. Orchidom's Sales Division is familiar with the customs rules and import regulations for many Caribbean and Latin American destinations and can assist customers with the completion of formalities. Both minimum purchase restrictions and quantity discounts apply. |
