Plant Size and Maturity
One of the foundations of the original business plan for Orchids Dominicana was the production of larger and more mature orchid plants than were readily available elsewhere. The company's founders saw clearly that it was becoming ever more expensive, due to escalating energy and labor costs, to grow plants on for the extra year or so necessary to produce orchids that could "make a statement". The trend was obvious for all to see: mass producers aiming for the mass market through "big box" retailers and most other producers intent on selling their plants at the earliest possible moment in order to clear bench space for the next "turnover".
Our intention was to counter this trend and offer another alternative. We direct our marketing toward small-to medium-sized orchid wholesalers, those with a more demanding up-scale clientele, and those whose volume demands were of little or no interest to the volume producers. By taking advantage of the Dominican Republic's ideal climate and favorable labor costs, we can supply orchids that are increasingly hard to find in the marketplace: those with an extra measure of maturity and greater flower counts, but at prices customers can afford.
Here are examples of the sizes of plants we offer:
Multifloral Phalaenopsis
Standard Phalaenopsis
Phalaenopsis-type Dendrobiums
Equitants and Other Small-growing Oncidiums
Cattleyas
When placing an order with Orchids Dominicana, don't hesitate to ask about the plant sizes that will be included in your shipment. If the sizes of your plants are not shown in the representative size photos that accompany the lists of available plants, our staff will be happy to take a few photos of the plants selected for your order, and e-mail them to you for your approval. |
