The company's headquarters and primary production facilities are located in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, which provides convenient and economical access to the United States, Central America and South America.  Orchidom is as close to its customers as their telephones or their computers.

Orchidom is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its founding this year. At its launch in 1996 there were no orchids and no greenhouses, only an orchid laboratory and a business plan dedicated to the production of top-quality orchids to meet the needs of commercial orchid growers and wholesalers in the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America. The company's founders and senior managers have decades-long experience with greenhouse orchid culture, orchid hybridizing, commercial orchid production, and orchid sales.

Production Facilities

Laboratory Facilities

Greenhouse Facilities

Laboratory production is 70,000 to 75,000 flasks annually. At any one time, the 7,000 square feet of shelf/bench space set aside for flasks contains  35,000 to 40,000 flasks.

Greenhouse space totals 500,000 square feet under roof, augmented by offices for the managers of greenhouse operations and local and export sales, warehouse space, packing and shipping areas. Irrigation is supported by two 50,000 gallon cisterns supplied with almost perfect, mountain-stream water.

In addition to laboratory, greenhouse and administrative facilities in Santo Domingo, the company also operates production facilities in the high mountain valley agricultural center of Constanza, as well as production, sales and administrative facilities in Puerto Rico and the United States.

Orchidom's Environment

Why is Orchidom located in the Dominican Republic?

While our superior breeding lines, our cultural practices and the skill of our greenhouse personnel are essential, nature is Orchidom's "chief grower". Clear mountain-stream water, ideal temperatures and gentle trade winds provide us with a growing environment in which chemicals and fertilizers are needed only in minimal amounts. This lowers our production costs while, at the same time, producing faster-growing and stronger orchids. It's not often that you see orchid greenhouses where lizards, birds, frogs, butterflies, and other creatures happily co-exist with the orchids.

Nearly ideal growing conditions eliminate the need for closed greenhouses or mechanical ventilation by taking advantage of the prevailing trade winds. The labor-intensive orchid production process is supported by a favorable labor market, yielding significant cost savings that are passed on to Orchidom's customers in the form of lower prices than those offered by other producers of comparable products.

The breeding stock used by Orchidom's hybridizers, from which the orchids presently offered for sale are descended, is the product of decades of collecting, selecting and breeding by the company's principal hybridizers. These breeding collections feature many plants that are the product of generations of breeding effort and are on the cutting edge of orchid breeding today, especially the company's Phalaenopsis, its compact-growing Dendrobiums, mostly the larger-flowered Phalaenopsis-types, its smaller-growing Oncidinae, and its Mini- and Midi-Cattleyas. The company's principal hybridizers are active participants in the American Orchid Society's Orchid Judging Program, and plants from their breeding collections have been recognized by the AOS with more than 300 flower quality and cultural awards.

[Need text explaining the company's support of the Salamanca community, including support for the school (making a fifth grade available, physical maintenance, providing educational materials, Christmas party, etc.); health care (anti-parasite treatment, mosquito control?, etc.); athletics (support for the town's winning baseball team, establishing little league, etc.). Perhaps something on the "prosperity" that Orchidom's presence has brought to Salamanca as the first major employer since the demise of the sugar plantations. Include photos of the school, school class, baseball team, administering de-parasiting.

Shipping Information

Import requirements of destination countries

More on the re-potting of orchids received from Orchidom.

As a general matter, the regulations of the United States Department of Agriculture require that orchids imported into the United States be shipped bareroot. However, the regulations make an exception for plants growing on coconut husks, out-of-pot but with the rootball undisturbed. Regulations vary from country to country in the Caribbean and Latin America, but most countries are less restrictive than the U.S. The company ships Phalaenopsis bareroot, including in-spike Phals, year-round. While some Dendrobiums are shipped bareroot, most are shipped out-of-pot but with the rootball intact, growing on chunks of coconut, enabling plants to be shipped in-spike. Oncidiums and Cattleyas have typically been shipped bareroot, but increasing numbers of plants are now being grown on coconut chunks to enable their shipment in-spike or in-bud.
